In recent years, fasting has become increasingly popular due to its amazing health and rapid weight loss benefits. My grandparents practiced it without water (black fasting) for days at a time, encouraged by religious beliefs. If you want to lose weight effectively, improve your health or even reduce chronic inflammation, fasting could be the ideal solution.
Since I have practiced this in the past and plan to do it again soon, I decided to explain here what fasting is and how to practice it correctly for maximum results.
Fasting involves not eating at all for periods longer than 24 hours, often between 48 hours and even several days or weeks, depending on personal goals. It is different from starvation because fasting is a conscious and controlled choice, unlike starvation which occurs involuntarily.
The major benefits of fasting
1. Lose weight effectively and quickly
This process stimulates the rapid burning of the body fat. When the body stops taking in food, it begins to burn stored fat for energy, promoting efficient weight loss. Fasting also significantly lowers insulin levels, the hormone responsible for fat storage.
2. Autophagy and chronic disease prevention
One of the biggest benefits of fasting is autophagy – a natural process by which the body recycles and eliminates damaged cells, altered proteins and toxins. This cleanses the body at the cellular level and helps prevent chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes or inflammatory diseases.
3. Reduce inflammation and improve the immune system
Abstaining from food is also highly effective in reducing chronic inflammation and symptoms of autoimmune diseases. By autophagy and removing damaged cells, the body resets its immune system and reduces the risk of excessive inflammatory reactions.
4. Improve insulin sensitivity and prevent diabetes
Through fasting, the body’s sensitivity to insulin improves considerably. This reduces the risk of developing diabetes and other metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.
5. Support brain health and cognitive functions
Ancient scientists and philosophers regarded fasting as beneficial for mental clarity and improved cognitive function. During fasting, the brain functions with the help of ketone bodies – a source of energy that favors concentration and increased attention.
6. Help prevent and fight cancer
Recent studies confirm that fasting can inhibit the growth of cancer cells, in particular by reducing insulin and activating autophagy. This can be of great help in complementary strategies to prevent and fight different types of cancer.
7. Prolonged longevity and anti-aging effects
Through fasting, the body triggers genetic processes that enhance longevity and slow cell ageing. This regenerative process is directly linked to the activation of autophagy, which eliminates toxins and damaged cells, keeping the body young and healthy.
Some important things to know about fasting
How to start fasting properly
When starting an extended fast, it is important to be physically and mentally prepared. If you’ve never fasted before, the easiest way is to start gradually, with short periods of intermittent fasting (16-20 hours), then increasing the duration until you reach fasting (48-72 hours or more). This will give your body enough time to adjust to using fats and ketones for energy instead of glucose.
At first, you may feel tired, hungry or even slightly irritable. These symptoms are completely normal and usually pass after the first 2-3 days as the body adapts to the new metabolic state. To reduce these unpleasant effects, you can take electrolyte supplements (in particular sodium, potassium, magnesium) and hydrate yourself properly by drinking only as much water as your body needs during this process. In addition, you can drink unsweetened coffee or tea, but no other foods, as these can disrupt the benefits of autophagy.
Drinking fluids and taking supplements during fasting
During fasting, it is essential to consume:
- As much water as your body requires to prevent dehydration.
- It is even recommended to use nutritional supplements, especially electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium) and B-complex vitamins, vitamin C and vitamin D, to avoid deficiencies and possible complications.
- You can drink natural coffee and tea without sweeteners or other additives.
The risks of electrolyte deficiency in fasting
One of the most important things to know about fasting is that the rapid loss of electrolytes, especially during the first few days of fasting, which can lead to serious health problems, such as:
- muscle weakness
- dizziness
- palpitations
- nervousness
- heart rhythm disturbances or even loss of consciousness
That is why proper electrolyte supplementation and water consumption are mandatory!
Adjusting to fasting
It’s important to know that during the first few days of fasting, you may feel uncomfortable, irritable or even tired as your body transitions from burning glucose to burning fats and ketones for energy. These symptoms are temporary, and the body will gradually adapt and the initial hunger will fade, giving way to increased well-being and mental clarity.
Can fasting keep you awake and alert at night ?
Fasting can affect your sleep and ability to fall asleep, making you feel more alert and even have difficulty sleeping. This alertness occurs because the body starts to use ketone bodies (ketones) as its main source of energy. Ketones have the ability to boost mental clarity and alertness, which is extremely beneficial during the day, but can become problematic at night.
In addition, fasting can also lead to changes in cortisol levels, a hormone that directly influences alertness and the sleep-wake cycle. Increased cortisol levels, especially at night, can make it difficult to fall asleep or maintain deep sleep.
To reduce these effects and get a better night’s sleep during this process, it is recommended that you pay attention to proper electrolyte supplementation, avoid unnecessary stress and create a quiet environment before bed (avoid blue light). You can also avoid drinking coffee and green/black tea in the second half of the day to minimize further stimulation of the nervous system.
It’s important to note that these difficulties are temporary and decrease significantly once the body fully adapts to fasting.
The Dawn phenomenon and high blood sugar in the morning
Some people notice an unexplained rise in blood glucose early in the morning, even without food (the Dawn phenomenon). This is due to insulin resistance, and the sugar comes from the liver, not the diet. The phenomenon is temporary and resolves over time by continuing fasting and eating a healthy diet. If it persists and becomes a cause for concern, a simple walk can help bring your blood sugar down quickly.
How to start eating again after fasting
One of the most important stages of fasting is refeeding. This phase requires special attention because your body has gone a long time without food and you need to gradually adapt to eating solid foods.
The safest way to start eating again is by eating small, easily digestible foods such as a green salad with olive oil, avocado, a vegetable soup, soft boiled eggs or a few nuts. It’s essential to avoid processed foods, refined carbohydrates and sugar immediately after fasting as these can cause major electrolyte imbalances, particularly a sudden drop in intracellular potassium, which could lead to serious health problems.
The first meal should be small, after which it’s best to wait a few hours to see how your body reacts. Gradually, you can introduce larger amounts and more complex foods, while continuing to hydrate properly and supplement electrolytes. This careful approach will help you retain the benefits you gained during this process and prevent any digestive discomfort or complications.
Fasting and the paleo ketogenic diet
To preserve the benefits in the long term, it is recommended to adopt a healthy paleo ketogenic diet after the fast is over. This diet keeps insulin and inflammation levels low, contributing to metabolic health, preventing diabetes and maintaining optimal body weight.
Conclusion
This is a natural and powerful way to improve your health and lose body fat. In general, for the future, avoid snacking, hydrate properly and fast responsibly to maximize its incredible health effects.
